The Best Local Breaks: Where to Paddle Out
OIB is famous for its consistent, fun surf. The waves here are incredibly approachable, making it a fantastic spot for beginners and longboarders. If you are looking for slightly better-formed waves, paddling out near the Ocean Isle Beach Pier usually offers the best sandbars and the most reliable breaks.
If you are looking for a laid-back, mellow session, Sunset Beach is your spot. Thanks to the island's geographic position, the waves here tend to be gentle, rolling lines that are absolutely perfect for longboarding and teaching young kids how to surf for the very first time.
With over 10 miles of south-facing shoreline, Oak Island has plenty of room to spread out and find your own private peak. The breaks near the Ocean Crest Pier and the Oak Island Pier are local favorites. Because of the island's unique angle, OKI can often pick up swells that miss the other surrounding islands!
Holden Beach is known for being a bit quieter and less crowded than its neighbors, which means more waves for you! The wave shape here can occasionally get a little steeper depending on the sandbars, making it a super fun, dynamic wave when the offshore winds kick in.
While historic Southport is located on the Cape Fear River and doesn't have ocean waves, it is the perfect coastal basecamp! Soft-Top 8' Surfboard: This classic 8-foot soft-top is one of the best performing learning boards available. It features a single centered fin, making it incredibly stable and forgiving for brand-new surfers.
Surfboard: 8'4" Magnum: Looking to graduate from a foam board? The Magnum will help novice surfers gain confidence and progress in their skills. It features a volume of 72 L, a width of 23.25", a thickness of 3.2", and weighs 17 lbs.
Surfboard: 7'3" Mini Malibu: The Mini-Malibu is the perfect all-rounder, fabulous for new surfers looking for a bit more maneuverability. It boasts a volume of 46 L, a width of 21.25", a thickness of 2.5", and weighs a manageable 12.5 lbs.
Surfboard: 6'7" Shortboard: If you know what you are doing, this is your board! Intermediate surfers will love the Shortboard, while advanced riders can truly push its limits on steeper wave days. It features a volume of 38 L, a width of 20.75", a thickness of 2.4", and weighs just 10.5 lbs.
Timing is Everything: Check the Tides!
Any local surfer will tell you that the secret to a great session is knowing what the water is doing. Depending on the sandbars, some of our local spots break best at mid-tide, while others are best at high tide.
