Brunswick Beaches Vacation Guide

Travel Tips for Oak Island, Ocean Isle, Sunset Beach & Holden Beach

If you ask a local what the best vehicle for island life is, they won't say a golf cart and they certainly won't say a minivan. They’ll tell you: It’s a bicycle.

The Southern North Carolina coast was practically designed for two wheels. From the historic riverfront of Southport to the wide, flat sands of Sunset Beach, our region offers miles of scenic riding that you just can't appreciate from a car window. There is no better way to smell the salt in the air, feel the ocean breeze, and spot the hidden details of the coast than from the seat of a cruiser.

But let’s be honest—strapping four bikes to the back of your SUV for a long road trip is a hassle. The rack rattles, the handlebars scratch your paint, and it’s just one more thing to stress about.

At Mr. Beach Rentals, we deliver to Oak Island, Holden Beach, Ocean Isle Beach, Sunset Beach, and Southport. Here is your guide to the best local routes and choosing the perfect ride for your vacation.

Part 1: Choose Your Route

Local secrets for every beach town we serve. Free Delivery!

Oak Island is massive (over 12 miles long!), making it the undisputed cyclist's paradise of the region.

  • The Lighthouse Run: Head east toward Caswell Beach to visit the Oak Island Lighthouse. It is one of the distinct lighthouses in the US that you can tour inside. The ride offers stunning views of the marsh and the ocean. Tip: Since this is a longer ride, our E-Bikes are the secret weapon here!

  • The Davis Creek Twist: For a ride that feels closer to nature, cruise down Pelican Drive. The road winds in and out following the natural bends of the Davis Canal. Be sure to weave onto Marsh Hen Drive where the road hugs the water closest, offering front-row views of the marsh grasses and wading birds.

  • The Waterway Loop: For a quieter ride away from the beach traffic, head toward the Intracoastal side to visit the Oak Island Nature Center. The roads here are shaded by ancient oaks and offer peaceful views of the waterway.

  • Cruising Beach Drive: Beach Drive runs parallel to the ocean for almost the entire length of the island. It’s the perfect straight-shot for checking out the colorful beach cottages and feeling the ocean breeze as you pedal.

Holden Beach is a classic family strand with incredible views at every turn.

  • The East End Inlet Ride: Head east on Ocean Boulevard (which turns into McCray Street) until the road ends. It’s a scenic ride that rewards you with stunning views of the Lockwood Folly Inlet and Oak Island across the water.

  • The Pavilion Loop: Cruise to the center of the island at Jordan Boulevard. This is the heartbeat of Holden Beach, where you can check out the bridge views or catch the summer concert series at the Pavilion.

Ocean Isle is unique because of its concrete canals and perfectly flat terrain.

  • The Canal Loop: Start near the Museum of Coastal Carolina and cruise down Second Street. From there, you can turn into the quiet canal streets named after NC cities (like Monroe Street). These flat loops offer stunning views of the waterfront homes and boats.

  • Oceanfront Cruising: For a breeze with a view, pedal along First Street. This road runs directly along the dunes, giving you a front-row seat to the ocean without getting sand in your gears.

  • Beach Strand Riding: At low tide, the beach itself becomes a highway! This is the perfect location for our Fat Tire Bikes, allowing you to ride right along the surf line from the pier down to the inlet.

Sunset Beach is the smallest and quietest of the islands, making it arguably the safest for families with young children on bikes.

  • The Kindred Spirit Quest: Ride to the far west end of the paved road (Main St). From there, take your bike onto the sand (low tide is best!) and pedal roughly 1.5 miles into the Bird Island Reserve to find the famous Kindred Spirit Mailbox. It’s a bucket-list ride you can’t do by car!

Southport isn't a beach town; it's a historic riverfront town that feels like a movie set—mostly because it is one!

  • The "Safe Haven" Loop: Pedal down Bay Street along the Cape Fear River to see the "Fishy Fishy" restaurant (a filming location) and the stunning Victorian homes facing the water.

  • The Downtown & Park Glide: Cruise down the vibrant N Howe Street to browse the local antique shops and galleries. Then, hang a left onto E Moore Street to glide past Franklin Square Park, a historic green space shaded by centuries-old live oaks.

Part 2: Pro Tips for a Great Ride

Essential knowledge for biking on the North Carolina coast.

  • Get the Perfect Fit: Don't settle for a cramped ride! Most of our bikes feature quick-release clamps so you can adjust the height in seconds. Click here to watch our quick video guide on how to adjust your seat for maximum comfort.

  • The Wind Rule: Here is a pro tip for any island ride: Always start your ride into the wind. That way, when you are tired and ready to head back, the ocean breeze will push you home! (Same rule applies for watersports!)

  • Beach Riding 101: If you rent our Fat Tire Bikes, timing is everything. Plan your ride for low tide when the sand is hard-packed near the water’s edge. It feels like riding on a paved road!

⚠️ Important Safety Note: In North Carolina, anyone under 16 is required by law to wear a helmet. We offer helmet rentals if you need them, or feel free to bring your kids' favorites from home to ensure the perfect fit.

Part 3: Choose Your Ride

We stock a bike for every age, size, and riding style.

1. The Beach Cruisers (Classic Meets Comfort)

The quintessential island ride. Simple, comfortable, and timeless.

  • The Adults: Our most popular option is the 26" Adult Cruiser (fits 5'0" - 6'0"). We also have a premium option which adds a basket and cup holder to our newest portion of the fleet.

  • For the Tall Riders: We stock 29" Cruisers (6'0" & up) so your knees aren't hitting the handlebars.

  • For Tweens & Teens: We carry 24" Cruisers (4'5" - 5'4"), perfect for those who have outgrown "kid bikes" but aren't ready for a full adult frame.

  • For Kids: We have single speed 20" Bikes (4'0" - 5'0") and 16" Bikes (3'5 - 4'0") for smaller riders.

  • Make it Yours: Add a basket to carry your towel!

2. The E-Bike (The Game Changer)

If you want to explore the entire island without breaking a sweat, this is your secret weapon. Our Electric Bikes feature step-thru frames for easy access.

  • How it works: Use Pedal-Assist to get a boost while you exercise, or use the Throttle to let the bike do all the work while you enjoy the view.

3. The Fat Tire Bike (The Beach Conqueror)

Want to leave the pavement behind? These "Monster Trucks" of the bike world feature massive, extra-wide tires designed to float over soft terrain. They are perfect for riding directly on the beach strand at low tide.

4. For the Little Riders

  • Child Seats: Attach behind the adult seat for toddlers.

  • Bike Trailers: Ride low behind the bike—kids love riding in their own personal "carriage"!

  • Kids' Bikes: We have 16" bikes (3'2" - 4'6") with training wheels available.
