Dog-Friendly Beaches in Brunswick County, NC: Beach Rules, Dog Parks & Local Tips

Bringing your dog to the Brunswick County beaches is pretty easy, but the rules change depending on which island you're visiting.

Oak Island and Caswell Beach even allow controlled off-leash time during parts of the year. Holden Beach, Ocean Isle Beach and Sunset Beach require a leash and have summer hours when dogs aren't allowed on the beach at all.

Fall is one of my favorite times to bring a dog to the beach. The sand isn't as hot, the beaches are less crowded, and by mid-October some of the rules become much more dog-friendly.

Here's what you need to know for Oak Island, Caswell Beach, Holden Beach, Ocean Isle Beach and Sunset Beach.

Rules can change, so pay attention to signs when you arrive, especially around public accesses and parking areas. These are the rules for 2026.

Oak Island

Oak Island is probably the most flexible of our beaches if you're traveling with a dog.

Dogs can be on the beach throughout the year. From March 16 through October 14, they need to be physically leashed.

Beginning October 15 through March 15, Oak Island allows dogs off leash on the beach under the Town's seasonal rules as long as they remain properly controlled.

There is an important detail here: off-leash permission does not mean letting your dog run into the ocean. Oak Island specifically prohibits taking an off-leash dog into the surf.

You still need to pick up after your dog, and voice commands or electronic leashes don't count as a physical leash during the leash-required season.

My Favorite Oak Island Dog Walk

For scenery, it's hard to beat the west end around The Point.

You've got the Lockwood Folly Inlet on one side, the ocean on the other and a huge stretch of sand when the tide is right.

This is also one of the places where checking the tide before you leave makes a big difference. Low tide can open up a lot more room for walking.

If you're going in the evening, The Point is also my favorite place on Oak Island for sunset. Our Oak Island sunrise and sunset guide has more detail on that area.

One thing to remember: e-bikes and other motorized transportation aren't permitted on the beach strand itself. Ride to the access, park the bike and walk from there.

Caswell Beach

Caswell Beach may be the most dog-friendly stretch of beach in the area if your dog does well off leash.

Dogs that are under their owner's control can be off leash on the beach from dawn until 9:00 AM throughout the year.

From October 15 through March 15, controlled dogs can be off leash on the beach throughout the day.

Outside those exceptions, dogs in town need to be leashed.

Caswell is also quieter than many of the surrounding beaches, particularly outside the summer season. That makes it a good choice for a long morning walk.

You can combine the beach with a stop near the Oak Island Lighthouse, or make Caswell part of a longer day exploring the eastern end of Oak Island.

If your dog isn't reliable off leash, there's no reason to push it. A long leash walk on an uncrowded beach is still a pretty good morning.

Holden Beach

Holden Beach keeps things simple.

Dogs aren't allowed on the beach between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM from May 20 through September 10.

Outside those dates and times, dogs are welcome on the beach but need to remain on a physical leash.

That makes fall particularly easy. By October, you can walk the beach with your dog at whatever time works best instead of trying to beat the summer restriction.

For a long walk, I like planning around low tide. The firmer wet sand is easier on both you and the dog, especially if you're going a couple of miles.

If you're an early riser, the eastern end is also a good sunrise walk. We cover that area in our Holden Beach sunrise and sunset guide.

For the rest of your trip, our Holden Beach vacation guide has more local ideas.

Ocean Isle Beach

Ocean Isle Beach allows dogs on the beach outside its summer restricted hours, but they must stay on a leash.

From Memorial Day through Labor Day, dogs are not permitted on the beach strand between 9:00 AM and 6:00 PM, even if they're leashed.

Outside that window, dogs are welcome on the beach on a leash.

There is one Ocean Isle rule worth knowing before you arrive: dogs aren't allowed in the public beach access or public parking areas.

That sounds odd when you're trying to get a dog onto the beach, so this is one place where I would pay particular attention to the posted signs and use the designated route appropriately rather than assuming every public access works the same way.

Once you're on the beach, I like the east side for an early morning walk and the west side later in the day.

Our Ocean Isle sunrise and sunset guide has more information on both ends of the island.

You can also use our Ocean Isle Beach vacation guide when planning the rest of the stay.

Sunset Beach

Sunset Beach allows dogs on the beach throughout the off-season as long as they're leashed and under control.

During summer, dogs are prohibited from the beach between 9:00 AM and 6:00 PM from the Friday before Memorial Day through Labor Day.

Outside those hours, they're welcome on the beach.

Sunset Beach requires dogs to remain on a leash no longer than 10 feet, and electronic leashes don't count.

A Long Walk Toward Bird Island

If you and your dog are both up for a longer walk, head west toward Bird Island.

This is one of the best stretches of undeveloped beach in the area, but don't underestimate the distance if you're starting near the western public accesses.

Bring water for both of you, check the tide and remember that you'll still have to walk back.

Our Sunset Beach sunrise and sunset guide covers the west end in more detail.

Two Dog Parks I Recommend Near the Beaches

Sometimes what a dog really needs isn't another leash walk. They need somewhere to run.

There are several parks around Brunswick County, but these are the two I would point visitors toward.

Hannon A. Templeton Park on Oak Island

If you're staying on Oak Island or Caswell Beach, Hannon A. Templeton Park is the obvious choice.

It's at 4106 E. Oak Island Drive and has fenced off-leash areas with separate sections for large and small/medium dogs.

There are watering stations, cleanup bags, benches and shade.

It's easy to work into the day because you're already on the island. Let the dog get some energy out at the park, then head to the beach once everyone is ready to slow down.

Ocean Isle Beach Park

For Ocean Isle Beach and Sunset Beach, I like Ocean Isle Beach Park at 6483 Old Georgetown Road.

It's just a few miles off the islands and includes a dedicated dog park along with a walking trail, playgrounds, tennis and pickleball courts, restrooms and other recreation areas.

The park is open daily from 8:00 AM to 10:00 PM.

This one is particularly useful if you've already taken the dog for a beach walk and still have a dog staring at you like you've done absolutely nothing all day.

Get your Dog a King of Pups

If you happen to see our King of Pops cart while you're out, the dog doesn't have to watch everyone else get a frozen treat.

King of Pups are frozen treats made specifically for dogs made with all-natural ingredients.

They're especially good after a warm beach walk.

A King of Pups makes a good post-beach treat.

If you're planning a birthday party, family reunion, wedding, vacation-house gathering or another dog-friendly event, you can also book a King of Pops cart and include something for the dogs.

A Few Things I Would Bring for a Dog Beach Day

You don't need much, but I wouldn't head out without plenty of fresh water, a bowl, waste bags, a physical leash, shade if you're staying awhile and a towel for the ride home.

The sand can get considerably hotter than the air temperature during summer.

If you can't comfortably keep the back of your hand on the sand, I wouldn't expect a dog's paws to enjoy walking on it either.

Early morning and evening are usually better during the hottest part of the year anyway. Our Brunswick Islands weather guide can help if you're deciding which part of the day makes the most sense.

Check the Tide Before a Long Walk

This is something visitors overlook all the time.

At low tide, you usually have a wider stretch of firm sand. At high tide, that same walk can turn into a much narrower strip of softer sand.

For a short walk it doesn't matter much. If you're taking the dog toward The Point, Bird Island or several miles down Holden Beach, it matters.

Fall May Be the Best Time to Bring a Dog

Summer gets most of the attention around here, but I think fall is better for dogs.

The beaches are quieter. The sand is cooler. You don't have to structure the entire day around the heat, and the seasonal dog rules become much easier.

October 15 is especially worth remembering if you're staying on Oak Island or Caswell Beach because that's when their broader seasonal off-leash rules begin.

Even on the beaches where a leash is always required, October gives you a lot more freedom to take a long morning walk, come back in the afternoon or stay out through sunset.

Bring some water, know the rules for the island you're on and clean up after your dog. The rest is pretty easy.

If you're driving to a public beach access, our 2026 Brunswick County beach parking guide covers the current parking rules for all five beaches.
