Brunswick Beaches Vacation Guide

Travel Tips for Oak Island, Ocean Isle, Sunset Beach & Holden Beach

If you truly want to experience the vibrant wildlife and peaceful beauty of the North Carolina Brunswick Islands, you need to get off the sand and onto the backwaters.

Stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) is one of the most popular, relaxing, and family-friendly activities on the coast. The calm Intracoastal Waterway, winding salt marshes, and tidal creeks surrounding our islands are the absolute best places to paddle. It is common to see sea turtles, leaping fish, coastal birds, and even dolphins cruising right alongside your board!

Here is everything you need to know about paddleboarding our local waters, finding the best launch spots, and how Mr. Beach Rentals makes getting your gear completely effortless.

The Best Local Launch Spots: Where to Paddle

The backwaters of Ocean Isle are a paddler's dream. The winding canals and expansive salt marshes offer miles of calm, protected water. Whether you are staying in a beachfront house or a canal-front condo, we deliver your SUPs directly to your door so you have them for the entire duration of your trip.

Sunset Beach is famous for its untouched, pristine coastal reserves. Paddling through Jinks Creek and the surrounding marshes offers a serene, incredibly scenic experience. We deliver premium paddleboards directly to your Sunset Beach vacation house or condo, giving you the freedom to launch whenever the water is glassiest.

Oak Island is loaded with incredible paddling routes, including the beautiful Davis Canal that runs through the center of the island. However, the absolute best spot to paddle is The Point at the far west end of the island, where the beach meets the Lockwood Folly Inlet. It is a stunning, calm area perfect for spotting wildlife! We deliver directly to all OKI houses and condos for the duration of your stay.

The Lockwood Folly River and the Intracoastal Waterway behind Holden Beach offer wide-open, peaceful paddling away from the crowds. We bring the paddleboards right to your Holden Beach vacation home or condo so you can keep them for your whole trip and hit the water at your own pace.

Historic Southport sits right on the convergence of the Cape Fear River and the Intracoastal Waterway. The nearby creeks are heavily shaded by live oaks and steeped in local history. We deliver your boards straight to your Southport house, hotel, or Airbnb so you can easily transport them to the best local creek launches for your entire stay.

Timing is Everything: Check the Tides!

When you are paddling the coastal marshes, the tide is your best friend—and your biggest obstacle! Paddling against a strong tidal current can be exhausting, and heading into the shallow creeks at dead-low tide might leave your board stuck on an oyster bed.

For the easiest, most enjoyable paddle, try to launch a couple of hours before high tide so you can ride the incoming current into the creeks, and then ride the outgoing current back to your launch spot. Bookmark our Mr. Beach Rentals Tide Chart Page to check the daily highs and lows and time your adventure perfectly!

Free Delivery Directly to Your Door

At Mr. Beach Rentals, we offer 100% FREE delivery and pickup on all of our paddleboards. We bring the gear directly to your vacation house, condo, or hotel so you have unrestricted access to it for the entire duration of your stay. Wake up for a sunrise paddle or head out for a sunset cruise whenever you want!

Paddle Stress-Free with Accident Damage Protection

The coastal marshes are beautiful, but they are also home to sharp oyster beds and hidden rocks that can easily scratch or ding a paddleboard.

We want you to explore the creeks without stressing about your rental gear. That is why we highly recommend adding our Accident Damage Protection (ADP) to your SUP rental at checkout. For just a few dollars, ADP covers you against accidental dings, foam slices, and minor damage, giving you total peace of mind while you focus on the beautiful scenery.

Ready to hit the water? Reserve your paddleboards today and let us deliver the adventure right to your door!

Oak Island (affectionately known by locals as OKI) is a massive, family-oriented stretch of coastline in the North Carolina Brunswick Islands. 1. Simply Enjoy the South-Facing Beaches

You didn't come all this way to sit inside! The number one thing to do on Oak Island is to simply enjoy the pristine, 10-mile stretch of south-facing beach. At Mr. Beach Rentals, we have a simple philosophy: We don't just want to rent you the gear; we want you to have the best day of your life using it.

Anyone can drop off a kayak in a driveway. But as the local experts on the Brunswick Islands, we know that having the equipment is only half the battle. The other half? Knowing exactly when to use it.

The difference between a grueling workout and a magical sunset cruise often comes down to one thing: The Tides.

Why We Built Our Own Tool (The "No Junk" Policy)

If you have ever tried to check the tide on your phone, you know the struggle. You open a weather app, and suddenly you are bombarded with pop-up video ads, clutter, and data for a weather station 30 miles inland. You spend more time closing "X" buttons than you do planning your day.

We were tired of it.

We wanted something better for our customers—something clean, accurate, and hyper-local. So, we built it ourselves.

The Mr. Beach Rentals Tide & Weather Tool was designed with one goal: Clarity.

  • Mobile-First Design: We know you aren't sitting at a desk; you are sitting in a beach chair. Our tool is optimized for your phone, with large, easy-to-read text and clear charts that look great in the bright sun.

  • Zero Ads, Zero Junk: No pop-ups. No clickbait. Just the data you need to plan your adventure, instantly.

Why Timing is Everything for Your Rental

We see it happen all too often: A family rents a fleet of bikes or paddle boards, but they head out at the wrong time of day and struggle against the elements. We want you to work smarter, not harder.

Here is how using our local tide charts can upgrade your rental experience from "Good" to "Unforgettable."

1. Fat Tire Biking: Chasing the Low Tide

Our Fat Tire Bikes are "Monster Trucks" designed for the sand. But even these beasts have a sweet spot.

  • The Secret: The absolute best riding happens at Low Tide.

  • Why: When the tide goes out, it reveals a wide, flat highway of hard-packed sand near the water’s edge. It feels like riding on pavement!

  • The Hack: Pull up our tool on your phone during breakfast. Find the exact low-tide window, and plan your family ride for that hour. You’ll cruise down the coast effortlessly.

2. Kayaking & SUP: The "Free Ride"

Whether you are exploring the Davis Canal on Oak Island or paddling the Intracoastal at Holden Beach, the water moves fast.

  • The Secret: Use the tide to help you paddle.

  • Why: If you time it right, you can ride the current out for the first half of your trip and ride the tide change back to your dock.

  • The Hack: Our tool clearly shows wind speed and tide direction. Combine a calm wind day with a helpful current, and you’ll look like a pro on our Paddleboards and Kayaks.

3. Surfing: Clean Conditions

Renting a Surfboard? You need to know what the wind is doing.

  • The Secret: Wind direction is critical. You generally want "offshore" winds (blowing from the land into the ocean) to stand the waves up for a clean, rideable face.

  • The Hack: Check the wind direction arrow on our dashboard before you wax up your board. If the wind is blowing hard onshore, it might be a better day for the boogie boards!

Local Data for Local Adventures

We custom-built this resource to be hyper-local. We don't give you a generic "Wilmington" forecast; we give you the specific data for the sand you are standing on. It’s part of the Mr. Beach Rentals promise: We go above and beyond to provide the gear, the tools, and the knowledge you need.
